Post-Op Physical Therapy That Gets You All the Way Back
Our post-op physical therapy in Los Altos is one-on-one, 55-minute sessions built around your surgeon's protocol — from the first protected movements through the strength and confidence it takes to get back to work, sport, and everything in between.
Post-Op Physical Therapy We Provide Most Often
These five make up the bulk of the post-surgical recovery we see. Every plan is built around your surgeon's protocol and where you actually are — not a generic timeline.
-
TSR · Shoulder
Total Shoulder Replacement
Protecting the repair early, then rebuilding rotator cuff and scapular control so overhead reach comes back without guarding.
- Range of motion within surgeon limits
- Rotator cuff and scapular strength
- Dressing, driving, reaching overhead
-
TKR · Knee
Total Knee Replacement
Full extension and bend are the whole game early on. We chase both hard, then rebuild quad strength and a normal walking pattern.
- Restoring full extension and flexion
- Quadriceps and glute strength
- Stairs, chairs, and walking tolerance
-
THR · Hip
Total Hip Replacement
Rebuilding the hip and glute strength that gets lost before surgery, and retraining stride and balance so walking stops feeling careful.
- Glute and hip abductor strength
- Stride length and gait retraining
- Balance, stairs, and sleep positioning
-
Hysterectomy
Hysterectomy Recovery
The part of recovery most people are never told about: scar mobility, deep core, and pelvic floor coordination before returning to load.
- Scar tissue mobilization
- Deep core and pelvic floor retraining
- Graded return to lifting and exercise
-
Back Surgery
Fusion, Laminectomy & Discectomy
Rebuilding safe movement patterns and the core and hip strength that lets you bend, lift, and sit through a workday again.
- Movement patterns within precautions
- Core, hip, and postural endurance
- Sitting tolerance and return to work
All the Surgeries We Help People Recover From
If your procedure is not listed, it does not mean we cannot help. Ask us.
TSR — Total Shoulder Replacement (Anatomic & Reverse)
Recovery differs between anatomic and reverse replacements, and we build to whichever your surgeon performed. Early work protects the repair while keeping the elbow, wrist, and neck moving; later work rebuilds rotator cuff and scapular control for overhead function.
TKR — Total Knee Replacement
Full extension and flexion are the priority from day one, because range lost early is the hardest to get back. From there it is quadriceps strength, gait retraining, and building tolerance for stairs, driving, and standing.
THR — Total Hip Replacement
Hip and glute strength is often already lost before surgery from months of limping. We rebuild it while respecting any positional precautions, then retrain stride length, balance, and single-leg control.
Hysterectomy Recovery
Abdominal and pelvic surgery changes how the deep core and pelvic floor work together. We address scar mobility, retrain that coordination, and progress you back to lifting, core work, and exercise on a graded plan rather than a calendar date.
Back Surgery — Fusion, Laminectomy, Discectomy
Post-operative spine care is about restoring confident movement without violating precautions. We rebuild core and hip strength, retrain bending and lifting mechanics, and build the sitting and standing tolerance a workday demands.
C-Section Recovery
A C-section is major abdominal surgery, and it is routinely under-rehabbed. We work on scar tissue mobility, restoring deep core and pelvic floor function, and a graded return to carrying, lifting, and exercise — whether you are six weeks or six years out.
Abdominal Surgery
Recovery after abdominal procedures focuses on scar mobility, restoring core function, and returning safely to lifting and daily activity. Procedures we commonly see include:
- Hernia repair (inguinal, umbilical, incisional)
- Appendectomy
- Gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy)
- Bowel resection
- Laparoscopic and open abdominal procedures
General Back Surgeries
Beyond fusion, we support recovery from a range of spinal procedures:
- Lumbar or cervical spinal fusion
- Laminectomy and laminotomy
- Discectomy and microdiscectomy
- Foraminotomy
- Artificial disc replacement
- Kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty
General Hip Surgeries
Hip procedures we regularly rehabilitate:
- Total and partial hip replacement
- Hip arthroscopy
- Labral repair and reconstruction
- Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) surgery
- Hip resurfacing
- Hip fracture repair (ORIF)
General Shoulder Surgeries
Shoulder procedures we regularly rehabilitate:
- Total and reverse shoulder replacement
- Rotator cuff repair
- Labral and SLAP repair
- Bankart repair and shoulder stabilization
- Subacromial decompression
- Biceps tenodesis
- Frozen shoulder release (capsular release)
General Knee Surgeries
Knee procedures we regularly rehabilitate:
- Total and partial knee replacement
- ACL reconstruction
- Meniscus repair and meniscectomy
- MCL, LCL, and PCL repair
- Patellar realignment and stabilization
- Cartilage restoration (microfracture, OATS)
