“Breathing is the first act of life and the last, our very life depends on it.”
- Joseph Pilates
Amie first came across Pilates many years ago when she was traveling as a consultant. It was the first time she fell in love with a movement method. While she continued pursuing a career in product management and marketing, Amie often considered becoming a Pilates instructor. Then, life presented an opportunity - motherhood and moving to a different country where she couldn’t take her desk job - and she embarked on her movement education journey.
Since becoming a certified Pilates instructor and teaching, movement education has become Amie’s passion. As a mom of two energetic and life-loving boys, she has a deep desire to enjoy active play with them. This means keeping fit and strong, mentally and physically, through Pilates and complementary movement methods such as Gyrotonics/Gyrokinesis, and Yoga. Amie pays special attention to alignment and form in her teaching and specializes in working with women (including prenatal and postpartum) and kids. Her mission is to share her passion and knowledge with clients so they can develop their own body awareness and movement practices to lead active and play-filled lives.
Amie obtained her Pilates certification through STOTT Pilates in 2013. She takes multiple STOTT Pilates workshops and courses each year to keep her certification updated. To deepen her knowledge and satiate her curiosity of the body and its capacity for movement, she has taken workshops in Feldenkrais Method, Move Your DNA (Nutritious Movement), Gyrokinesis, and is planning to get certified in Gyrotonics.
TIP: Ask her about the time when a stingray thought she was food and actually tried to eat her leg. Luckily no teeth were involved. Geek out with her on neuroscience, anatomy, and movement. 🙂

Karen Matison
Pilates Instructor
“Change happens through movement and movement heals.” - Joseph Pilates
Karen first encountered Pilates back in 1987 at St. Francis Hospital’s Center for Sports Medicine and Dance Medicine. She needed help with a chronic Achilles tendon injury and was curious to see if Pilates could help. She knew, almost immediately, that she had found a robust system to rehab her injury and that Pilates would alter the course of her life. She spent over a year focusing on simply being a student of the method, and then in 1989, she became certified in teaching Pilates through the Center for Dance Medicine with Patrice Whiteside. With the encouragement of her teachers, she opened the first Pilates studio on the Peninsula in Palo Alto in 1990.
Early on, Karen started getting referrals from osteopaths, doctors, Physical Therapists, and all kinds of practitioners looking for a safe way for their patients to overcome their issues. Things grew from there, and the next step was to train other teachers so that she could meet the demands of all the people who wanted Pilates sessions. She was part of The Institute for the Pilates Method’s first-ever Teacher Training Course. Mentoring other teachers were and are a strength Karen possesses. Many of the teachers Karen trained went on to open their own studios, or were recruited to develop Pilates centers in clinics all throughout California.
As the field of Pilates grew, so did all the populations who sought out Pilates. Pregnant women, people with scoliosis, serious athletes, people who needed to cross-train, tech workers, people with neurological conditions…
Working with all these populations made Karen grow and stretch and develop expertise in order to serve her clients. Karen has a voracious appetite for continuing education and study and has worked with some of the best
practitioners in the fields of movement studies, bodywork,
and medicine.
Karen’s teaching philosophy is to find “whatever works best” for each client rather than following a particular ideology She and each of her clients are in a collaborative process, learning from each other. She’s also a fan of practice and supports and coaches her clients as they develop their own practice.
She feels honored to be part of such a dynamic field and is in awe of the human body and the potential of each person to live joyfully in their body, able to do the activities they want.
She believes that most people can age beautifully.
Karen is also a poet, who teaches poetry & creative writing at the college level. She loves studying and taking movement classes of many kinds. Currently, her movement passions are hiking, Pilates, yoga, tai chi, Qigong, contact improvisation, and water exercise.

"Yoga is the perfect opportunity to be curious about who you are."
In 1997 when I was certified for Relax With Yoga in the Integral Yoga tradition, I had only a hint of how genuine joy would fuel my life. Since then, I've been privileged to lead tens of thousands of yoga classes. I am the conceiver, co-creator, and happy proliferator of the Meditation Sampler program, and I feel especially fortunate to offer meditation guidance for women with cancer through WomenCare of Santa Cruz. So inspired by the centering effects of yoga and meditation, in 2015 I earned certification for various methods of hypnotherapy.
Yoga has been defined by ancient texts, as controlling/calming of the thought waves of the mind. I view treasured yoga poses in the context of being one of many equally honored steps toward that calm mind.
My yoga sessions encourage:
TRUST IN BODY INTUITION
I offer clear verbal instruction, without physically "adjusting" your position, as you best know your needs, desires, limitations, and strengths on any given day.
REALNESS
Vibrant yoga practice calls us to be real with ourselves. My style is unstuffy, inclusive, occasionally irreverent, sincere, and warm. Please be who you are.
COMMUNITY
We welcome, support, and encourage each other as friendships and knowledge of yoga both deepen. It is proven that the benefits of a loving community are immeasurable.
ABUNDANT PEACE... FOR ALL
Our innate peacefulness is naturally expansive, and unifying, and shapes the world around us. Indiscriminately and unreservedly, we share with all.

What Our Clients Say
-
This is great physical therapy!
Jennifer Jones
I have been going to physiofit after trying several other centers that did not work for me. As an older adult in my 70’s I needed to find a therapist that really understood how to take care of my many pains and aches. This is not an easy therapist to find, I was looking for someone who both understands the anatomy of an older body but also has the caring touch and sweet demeanor. Well I was so happy to find Katrina who is all of those things she is the best therapist I have ever worked with and has completely help me transform my pain into exercises and stretches that truly support me in my healing. I could not recommend her enough she is caring, knowledgeable, and patient. I feel very grateful to her support in this process of healing my body. You will be glad to work with her. Thanks -maryam

Physiofit has been fantastic! Keya and Katrina prepared me for knee surgery and then helped me thru 2 knee replacements. The longer appointments and combination of manipulation, exercises and Pilates really made a huge difference in my recovery time.

I've been coming for a few months now and I'm really impressed with the care I am receiving from Katrina. She gives me exercises that are challenging and helpful. I've already seen progress in the strength of my leg and a reduction in numbness in my foot from the disc pressure on my nerves. Overall, I appreciate the knowledgeable and dedicated therapists, the very friendly and helpful support staff, and the variety of equipment and treatments available.
Tere
I have seen Katrina for pelvic floor physical therapy this past year, and have struggled with nocturia for 15+ years. Prior to seeing Katrina, I saw 3 different urologists who were not able to find a solution for my night time voiding. I was given so many different medications - none of them worked. The doctors just said my symptoms were due to menopause, which was very vague and didn’t make sense to me. Waking up several times a night (every 2 hours) to urinate was very disruptive to my sleep, SO very frustrating. As someone with a complex medical history, I didn't think there would be a solution, and thought I'd have to live with this. I was pretty much ready to give up, until I found Katrina! Katrina is a very holistic therapist, she is very kind, genuine, competent, listening to my story, and doesn’t treat me like a “cookbook” patient - she really takes her time and looks at your body holistically during the evaluation. She explains everything that she is doing, which is very helpful because I've been trying to find an answer to my problem for years! She provides visual images and videos to help me learn about my issue, using the pelvic floor model as well, as I'm a visual learner. She is also very accessible - if I have any questions, she will respond to my email within 24 hours. I am now able to sleep through the night without waking up. I also don't leak urine anymore, so I don't have to wear those annoying and expensive pads when I play tennis. I have more energy throughout the day to participate in activities with my friends, which is important to me. Thank you Katrina for being my therapist and friend, problem solving with me, and never giving up on me.

I found PhysioFit through my friend who also had clogged milk ducts. I was having a persistence clog that wouldn't resolve and needed to unclog it. I'm in healthcare myself and I've never heard of therapeutic ultrasound that delivers heat to break down the clog. I've only heard of diagnostic ultrasounds. Katrina who is the physical therapist I saw explained that it's not new technology but usually used in PT to help with sore tissues and muscles. Katrina used the therapeutic ultrasound and massaging technique to get both of my clogs out! I felt relief immediately! The sessions was an hour and I was afraid I'll be uncomfortable while she worked on the clog, but Katrina was full of energy and chatted with me the whole time! The sessions are pricey ($290/session) but they were upfront on the cost and did try to bill my insurance. But since I have HMO insurance it was considered out of network and did not cover the session. However they do take FSA card and sometimes offer promos! In the end, super glad this place offers this type of service for lactating mothers.
